Reactions to Beyond the Pale were nearly unanimous when it came to its high praise. Despite some changes, Byers was very much a strong force within Marquee Moon and would continue to write songs for future releases – such as their first full-length release, Beyond the Pale (1985), for which both Byers and Degray collaboratively wrote every song. I'm going to venture a guess that Marquee Moon also opened up the Ramones' other shows in Germany, specifically the July 2nd show in their home base of Berlin. In 1985 they opened a show for the Ramones at Ernst-Merck-Halle in Hamburg on July 3rd. In a very unpopular move in the rest of the band's eyes, the charismatic and very cool-looking Byers would step away from the microphone, and bassist Nigel Degray stepped up as Marquee Moon's new singer. Amid their success, vocalist and Marquee Moon's manager Skid Byers found himself wanting something different. In 1984, bands associated with Neue Deutsche Welle (New German Wave) were still exploding, such as the international sensation of Nena and another group John Peel featured on his Peel Sessions several times, Xmal Deutschland (or X-Mal Deutschland), as darker sounds started to creep and take hold in areas like West Berlin. Invitations to play a live set for The John Peel Sessions were coveted and would often help break things open for bands like Nirvana, whom Peel invited to play for a session in 1989, four months after the release of their first album, Bleach. Another early nod to Marquee Moon's first single in 1984 came from none other than John Peel, the infamous Radio 1 disc jockey, record producer, and journalist who championed bands like The Undertones and Napalm Death, when he invited Marquee Moon to play a session.
